Scribe New York was founded by professional calligrapher Rita Polidori O’Brien, whose formal training includes the renowned Type@Cooper design program at Cooper Union and the Society of Scribes in New York City, where she is an active member. She is also affiliated with the National Arts Club and IAMPETH—the International Association of Master Penmen, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting—two communities that celebrate excellence in the fine arts and the lettered tradition.

Her journey with calligraphy began at the age of nine, when she received a broad-edged cartridge pen—a gift that sparked a lifelong devotion to the written word. Over the decades, Rita has studied and mastered a wide range of historic scripts, from the delicate flourishes of Copperplate and Spencerian to the structural beauty of Gothic, Uncial, and Roman Italic. Her repertoire continues to expand, grounded in tradition and refined through practice.

Today, Rita’s work spans private commissions, bespoke stationery, and collaborations with some of the world’s most iconic brands. With a niche in high-end fashion and luxury retail, she is often referred to as “The Luxury Scribe.” Her contributions include penning the handwritten letters of Anne Shirley for a published edition of Anne of Green Gables, blending literature and script in a truly timeless way.

In a world of haste and pixels, Rita chooses the the art of slowing down and writing with intention.
